What are DOT physicals?
DOT (Department of Transportation) physicals are medical exams completed by licensed medical examiners on the list of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) National Registry. The WithCare Clinic experts are highly qualified to complete these physicals.
DOT physicals consist of health exams mandated by FMCSA to obtain a commercial driver’s license. They’re needed to ensure that qualified drivers are mentally, emotionally, and physically healthy enough to safely operate commercial motor vehicles.
Do I require a DOT physical?
You may need to complete and pass a DOT medical exam if you:
- Operate a motor vehicle for interstate commerce
- Transport hazardous materials
- Drive a motor vehicle that carries more than 15 people
- Get paid to operate motor vehicles carrying more than eight people
Examples of commercial motor vehicles include buses, semi-trucks, delivery trucks, and large commercial vans.
What happens during DOT physicals?
During a DOT physical exam, your WithCare Clinic provider weighs you and checks your blood pressure and other vital signs. They discuss your medical history, ask about your symptoms and lifestyle, and review your medications.
Your family medicine provider also completes a physical exam to evaluate your health and well-being. They examine your reflexes, eyes, ears, throat, heartbeat, breathing, and limbs.
They also complete vision and hearing screenings and may order lab tests or other diagnostic testing to screen for additional concerns.
If you need treatment for diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, heart disease, or another medical condition, your medical provider ensures your medication or other treatment effectively manages the condition. They refer you to an eye doctor or another specialist when necessary.
What should I expect after a DOT physical?
After you complete a DOT physical and you meet all the requirements, your provider issues you a DOT medical card. You need this card to obtain or maintain your commercial driver’s license. DOT exams are valid for up to two years, but sometimes, your medical examiner’s certificate expires earlier if you have a chronic disease that requires more frequent medical monitoring.
